Draw Into The Shadows: Portfolio Reviews

Journal Entry: Fri May 4, 2012, 11:20 AM
Draw Into The Shadows: Internationally Acclaimed Transmedia Project Holds Portfolio Reviews At Bristol Comic Expo
by Barry Nugent

:pointr: "In order to build a credible portfolio of work and prove you can put out work professionally you have to have a crack at doing it non-professionally to professional standards. Unseen Shadows creates a platform on which you can do that." - Steve Penfold (artist on Fallen Heroes, Unseen Shadows: Reverend: Wrath of God, Moon and OMEN in Overload) :pointl:

Unseen Shadows unseenshadows.com/ is currently inviting submissions from artists (pencillers, colourists and inkers) for a number of stories.

I will be reviewing portfolios at the Bristol Comics Expo (12th -13th May) www.bristolexpo.co.uk/ from the Unseen Shadows table throughout the weekend. If you cannot make the show this year, or would like to send submissions in advance for discussion on the day please send an email to barryATunseenshadowsDOTcom but please do not send any files over 5mb by email ( I realise that this may mean the images will be in low res but that's fine). If the files are bigger than this please send a dropbox or largefile transfer link.

:pointr: "The Unseen Shadows "universe" is truly interesting and I'd like being involved within it, watching it expand. Working with some really nice and talented people is also a great incentive." – Valia Kapadai (artist on Unseen Shadows: The Immaculate Abortion of Dina Leigh). :pointl:

The stories in progress at the moment cover a wide variety of subject matter, and it is originality and quality that I'm looking for rather than any specific genre or art style. I would rather have something unusual, challenging, inventive, creative, and inspired than another version of something that is already out there. The writers who are currently scripting the stories will be working closely with me to select the artists we need.

:pointr: "Barry is a gentleman, absolute pleasure to work for. And as an artist, working for Barry not only provided an excellent work environment, a stable of the finest writers from the small press scene, but the opportunity to invest in and expand on one of the most interesting and diverse comic universes." – Rob Carey (artist on Unseen Shadows: Band of Butchers) :pointl:

There are no page rates available for Unseen Shadows work. Creators are offering their skills for free at this stage in the hope of this becoming something bigger and, of course, for love of the material.
All money taken from sales is put back into the company for further development and promotion. Right now consider this a way to reach an international audience as part of an already very successful transmedia project.

:pointr: "I had so much fun working with the professional and inspirational team on the last exciting story!" – Vicky Stonebridge (colourist on Unseen Shadows: Band of Butchers) :pointl:

What do you need to show me?

:bulletpurple: I need to see sequentials as well as pin ups (unless you want to be purely a cover artist – which is fine, but let me know that).

:bulletpurple: What formats you work in – traditional media, digital etc.

:bulletpurple: Whether you work in colour or black and white.

:bulletpurple: If you are submitting to be an inker or colourist then we need to see copies of the underlying pencils as well as your work.

:bulletpurple: Finally one of the most important things is to let us know the length of story to which you feel you can realistically commit. Unseen Shadows has comics projects of all different lengths from short stories to graphic novel length books.

I appreciate that indie artists are showing incredible dedication by working on their comics alongside day jobs and other commitments, but if I like your work enough to publish I will work with you to agree a schedule that suits all parties.
As an indie creator myself I appreciate that making submissions can be difficult and nerve-wracking. I will look at everything I receive, and although it may take time, respond to everyone. The important thing to remember is that your work may be great, and I may personally love it, but it sometimes will just not be what I'm looking for right now, but I will keep your details on file for when I need that just that style.

:pointr: "It has been an absolute pleasure, even when I pulled the diva move of wanting to change the look of a character halfway through drawing a series I was met with nothing but complete understanding and cooperation. The team are absolutely amazing to work with." – (Cormac Hughes artist on Unseen Shadows: Stolen) :pointl:

If you would like to see examples of some of the Unseen Shadows projects to date, to get a feel for the type of styles that have been used, and the levels of technical expertise needed, have a look at these previews www.facebook.com/pages/Unseen-… the preview from the Fallen Heroes Comic Adaptation unseenshadows.com/comics/falle…. Don't feel constrained by what you see. The Unseen Shadows universe is vast and I will be needing lots of different styles in future.

:pointr: "I'm actually returning for a third tour!  Haha, anyway. It was a huge learning curve, in which I learnt what I can and can't do in terms of sequential pages and learnt how to streamline my work flow and style into a far more professional sense and style. – Gat Melvyn (Colourist on Unseen Shadows: Fallen Heroes #1, #2 and Unseen Shadows: Wrath of God) :pointl:

Have a look around the website to explore some of the other transmedia elements that are being developed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR fellow deviants !!

Let's just hope 2012 will be a much better year than the previous one !!
:w00t:

I personally have high expectations for 2012. I might also make some huge changes in my life . Maybe.
One thing will remain stable, my love for drawing. My love for comics.

Speaking of which, I have a few great news to share !!

The anthology "Bayou Arcana volume 1: Songs of Love and Redemption", in which I'm involved, drawing a story by Jimmy Pearson, got mentioned last week in the Guardian, as well as in a few more other newspapers and blogs from all over the world !!
:D

"Bayou Arcana" will be published by Markosia in May, it will be officially launched at the Bristol Comic Expo (along with the other comic I'm illustrating "White Knuckle" by Cy Dethan), but you preorder your copy now through the Markosia e-store

www.markosia.com/wordpress/tit…

You can join our Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/groups/bayoua…

***

By the way you can still preorder a copy of White Knuckle www.myebook.com/index.php?opti…, by emailing me or Cy and enter the competition for an original painting by me

***

The cover for another anthology in which I'm involved, drawing a story by Ollie Masters, is also revealed and it looks AWESOME !!

check it out: whittlewaffle.blogspot.com/201…

***

Last but definitely not least, I just got an awesome "gift" tonight, I got my very first nomination for the Eagle awards (as Valia Kapa), in the "Favourite Artist: Fully-Painted Artwork" category !!!!
:o

I don't stand a chance, not even being in the final nomination list, and I have no clue who added me to the list, me but it's so cool !!
I'm super excited just by being there, among some of my favourite artists !!
:jawdrop:

You can vote for your favourite artists/comics here:

A free preview of the first eleven pages of White Knuckle, out in May 2012 from Markosia, is now available on MyeBook.

Take a look.

(Any suggestions and critiques are always welcome, needed and appreciated !!)

"Unforgiven meets Harry Brown - and strangles him."

Forty years ago, Seth Rigal was a man to be feared – a serial strangler with a string of victims. Now nearly seventy and tormented by a lifetime of monstrous violence, Rigal lives on the verge of poverty and quietly waits for the death he knows he deserves. Tortured and confused, still tormented by the drives that made him a killer in his youth, Rigal finds himself almost unconsciously stalking the daughter of his final victim – only to have his precious anonymity snatched from him when he accidentally saves her son's life. Seth Rigal, formerly known as the Gripper, just became a local celebrity.

The bodies won't stay buried any longer.

Story is written by the wickedly talented Cy Dethan, art by yours truly and letters are by Nic Wilkinson.

We have a White Knuckle Facebook Page where you can keep to update with what's happening as the book progresses, see previews of artwork and find out about the things that will happen for the launch.

Pre-orders will officially open next year but if you want to put your name down on the list now (no payment required until they open) then email cy[AT]cydethan.com.

Why would you do this? Well, the first 20 people to do so will have the opportunity to be drawn into the book as part of the Gripper's case files, and everyone who pre-orders will have the chance to win a piece of original art by Valia of the characters in the book.

All pre-orders get their copies signed by the whole team, of course.

We are hoping to be able to get some more goodies for those who pre-order as well - so watch this space for news!

Pre-order price will be £10 instead of £12.99 (+ postage of £2 UK or £4 rest of world or free to collect from the launch at Bristol comics convention in May 2012)

smells like Christmas..

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 5, 2011, 1:40 AM
..but unfortunately, for some of us (especially here in the tiny Hellas) it doesn't feel like Christmas.

I truly hope things will get better, even though it probably won't happen any time soon.
Until then we'll keep fighting, keep being creative and patient and we won't let go.

If you'd like to take a quick glimpse of the Greek reality, you can check the latest short comic, written  by Elias Katirtzigianoglou and illustrated by myself.
It is on the Comixiade website: www.comixiade.org/site/archive…

:)

On a more positive note, and as some of you might be already ordering gifts for you beloved ones, I thought it'd be nice to remind you about "Not Another Christmas Carole", a novella written by denlm, for which I had done some illustrations last year.

NOT Another Xmas Carole.. by neurotic-elf NOT Another Xmas Carole_001.. by neurotic-elf NOT Another Xmas Carole_003.. by neurotic-elf

I'll copy Denise's latest journal:

"Not Another Christmas Carole" takes a playful poke at Dicken's weathered tale of a man short on one kind of holiday spirit, and haunted by too many others. It's funny, romantic, teary, nondenominational, has marvelous illustrations by popular dA graphic artist, Valia Kapadai—and is on sale now for as little as $5 in e-reader format. A perfect stocking stuffer.

Check it out on Amazon.com and lulu.com, in hard cover, soft cover, color illustration, black and white, and three digital formats to suit any tablet.

If you order your copy on lulu.com before December 6, enter the code "SLEIGHRIDE" and get free shipping!

Synopsis:
Jasper "Kat" Petty has a case of Grinchitis. Most folks suffer a Scrooge-moment now and then, but for Kat, it's a virulent strain that has hung on for sixteen years.

In high school, young Petty had dreams of being a novelist tucked into one pocket and a national writing award stashed in the other. But that was before his Da died, leaving the family in financial chaos. Forced to give up college and take a blue-collar job, he now watches his friends start families while he struggles through a string of "Caroles" who love him and leave him in short order—nearly always at Christmas.

Enter: Chi, a comic devil who may or may not be God himself. The silver-haired eccentric with the wisecracking mouth and cockeyed view of living and loving shows Kat how to drop his prickly barriers and take one last shot at fulfilling his dreams—with of all things? Another Carole.

Hello everyone !!

I hope you're all doing great !!

Autumn has finally arrived, it's probably my favourite season, and usually one of my most productive ones as well.

So yeah, I've been keeping myself super-extra busy, drawing as much as possible, struggling not to feel depressed with everything wrong that's been going on here in Greece.

White Knuckle www.cydethan.com/index.php?pag… Cy Dethan www.cydethan.com, is my first priority at the moment, while I'm also working on the Kindred Spirits comic with JigokuNeko (both of them will be published by Markosia www.markosia.com/ in 2012), and a few more short comic stories and various illustrations !!
:boogie:

We have a facebook page for White Knuckle, and we will update it with some sneak peeks pretty soon, so go check it out and if you like it CLICKETY - CLICK please !!

I may have some more great news, regarding another (Greek) project that might be launched in ComicDom www.comicdom.gr/ but as usual I can't share much yet. OH COMICS !!
;)

Also, in case you're interested I still have copies of my selfpublished comics "Tw1sted Vision" and "100% Squishy / Kiander & Ablyss", just sent me a message for more info.

Hello everyone !!

I hope everyone is still  having fun, even if the summer is almost gone.
:sun:

My month off my day job ended a couple of days ago and I'm back at the office.
I'd be lying if I told you I'm happy about it, but hey I can't really complain now, can I ??
*sigh*

On my summer vacation I've had tons of fun and I actually finished some comic pages.
:w00t:

My story for the Womanthology (IDW) womanthology.blogspot.com … by Mandy McMurray dc.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Man… is now finished, quite earlier than I'd expected and it turned out pretty OK too !!
:bounce:

I've also finished the story written by Ollie Masters thelocalcomic.blogspot.com/ for The Fairy Tales Anthology (edited and published by Stacey Whittle whittlewaffle.blogspot.com/201… - ) but I'm not really happy about it, so I might re-draw some of the panels / pages.
:(

Penciling my Bayou Arcana story is also finished (written by Jimmy Pearson, will be published by Markosia in 2012)  smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co… and just got approval to colour it !!

I now have to focus on the second story (written by by Steven Stone writerstevenstone.blogspot.com… ) for the Urban Legends anthology, and moving on to penciling the third chapter of White Knuckle www.cydethan.com/index.php?pag… Cy Dethan www.cydethan.com, which is AMAZING !!

We also have a facebook page for White Knuckle, and we will update it with some sneak peeks pretty soon, so go check it out and if you like it CLICKETY - CLICK please !!

a whole month off work/a whole month of comics

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 29, 2011, 4:20 AM

Hello everyone !!

I hope everyone is having fun, enjoying the summer !!
:sun:

Today is my last day here at the office, only 3 more hours left to take a whole month off and focus on making comics !!
:w00t:

ofcourse I'm planning on spending some time on the beach, trying to catch up on some sleep, hang out with my boys, my family and friends, or just do nothing but laying on my swing for hours !!
:giggle:

I'll definitely be working on some amazing comic projects though, mostly illustrating some short comic stories for various anthologies:

- Womanthology (IDW) womanthology.blogspot.com -- story by Mandy McMurray dc.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Man…

- Bayou Arcana (Markosia)  smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co… - story by Jimmy Pearson

- The Fairy Tales Anthology (self published) by Stacey Whittle whittlewaffle.blogspot.com/201… - story by Ollie Masters thelocalcomic.blogspot.com/

- Urban Legends (TBA) - a second story by Steven Stone writerstevenstone.blogspot.com…

- Black Label Comics #2 (BLC) - story by IanStruckhoff (almost completed)

I also want to re-focus on the "Innocent Soul" comic by TravisLegge, which I've neglected due to this flood of projects, and I'm really sorry about this, but I'm hoping for a re-boot pretty soon - stay tuned !!

That's about it for now, they're having a "party" at the office down the hall (where I used to work and was pretty OK)

Take care !!

Gloomy Monday (on SPBM too) !!

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 25, 2011, 11:22 PM

In the end of January, long before Bristol, I had decided to submit a short comic story for the Eagles Initiative awards.

I already had two pages of Gloomy Monday ready, I was supposed to include them in my "100% Mushy - Kiander&Ablyss" comic, but instead I've decided to make some new pages, make it an actual story and submit it.

As usual, I left this for the very last minute, so I only had a week to find the story, finish it and submit it, plus I was an emotional wreck at the time, which of course never helps my creativity.

I did manage to have this story done by Friday though, but being insecure and uncertain whether I could even show this to someone else, I've decided to... pester my friend Lee Grice from the Small Press Big Mouth smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co… mostly asking him to edit it, check for the spelling / grammar mistakes I might have made and of course making any other suggestions was always useful.

Lee, being as awesome as he is, was really kind and he did corrected my mistakes and made a few suggestions. He said he really liked the story, but he thought the dialogue could be improved, suggesting I should add something like rhymed sentences instead of the captions I had used. He even sent me a couple of rhymes, as an example.

By Saturday, Lee had replaced all of my captions with really cute and funny rhymes and I was so excited watching the story being treansformed.

On Sunday (deadline day) we must have had exchanged a million e-mails, but by the end of the day we had created a funny and cute story !! (right ?!)
:giggle:

Hopefully this was only the first of many many many more stories me and Lee will make together.

THANK YOU LEE !!
:blowkiss:

Lee has posted his own thoughts about this, so if you're interested in reading them clickety-click zis smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co… and zis smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co…

Unfortunately the awards were cancelled and the story wasn't published in "100% Mushy - K&A" (I will probably include it in the next K&A comic), but I've decided to upload it here.

Enough with my ranting, I hope you liked the story as much as I enjoyed drawing it !!

Kindred Spirits

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 5, 2011, 11:24 PM
Hello !!

I hope everyone's enjoying the summer (or maybe even winter ?)
I still have to wait four more weeks until I take a few weeks of work, so that I could um...work on some COMICS !!
*NO REST FOR THE WICKED COMIC JUNKIES*
:headbang:

Anyway, I'd like to share some great news, which have been announced late last night on Lee & Stacey's superduperawesome blog SMALL PRESS BIG MOUTH
smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co…, about one more comic project I'm involved in, which has found a great home...

:star: KINDRED SPIRITS :star:

"A young man, desperate to save his sister from demonic possession, descends to Purgatory to save her. Once there, he must fight the illusions and traps set out for him if he is to reclaim his sister's soul and make his way back to the real world. The clock is ticking and his only help comes in the form of a mischievous girl in a fox mask."

Kindred Spirits is written and will be pencilled by Maggie Lewinowicz aka JigokuNeko, while I'll provide the inks, colours & letters. It will be published by Markosia www.markosia.com !!
:boogie:

This project means a lot to me, especially because ever since I met Maggie  at art classes, back in 1997, we've always dreamed about working on a project together, but never did.
If only our art teacher could see us now, he'd be FURIOUS !!!!!

Hey Mag, I think we should dedicate this comic to Mr. Fotou !!!!
:evillaugh:

Anyway, we're aiming for a mid 2012 launch, since sharing the artwork means that hopefully we'll have this comic finished in just a few months.

More projects to announce soon, can hardly wait to get thhem all finished !!

Take care and keep being creative !!

How is everyone ??

I'm currently neck deep in comics and in a really really bad mood, because of some cr*p I have to deal with.

K+A: deathline 001... by neurotic-elf

Let's not talk about these though, let's talk about COMICS instead !!

Tw1sted Vision is currently at the printer's, I've chose to print it in Ka-Blam, so it'll be available online as well.
As soon as I have more info, I'll let you know !!
I've also sent it in a Greek printing company, I've ordered 50 copies, so that I can have them with me at the two comic conventions I'll be attending this year.

Tw1sted Vision - 2nd edition.. by neurotic-elf

I'll also have one more comic - a double issue full of Kiander and Ablyss strips, old and new, 44 pages all in full colour !!
:excited:
I'm still working on it though, so I can't really share anything else for the time being, so stay tuned !!

K+A: sfx... by neurotic-elf

I'll be at the Fanzines floor at the ComicDom Expo [Athens 8-10 of April] and I'll share  table 69 with miss gliovampire at the Bristol  International Expo [Bristol 14-15 of May].
If you're attending any of these conventions, I'll be really happy if you come by and say "Hi" !!
:aww:

I'm also working on two more awesome short comic stories, one written by Lee Robson imaginarystories.co.uk, that will be published in the next Accent UK comic anthology accentukcomics.com Zombies II and another story written by Steven Stone writerstevenstone.blogspot.com… that will be included in Steven's anthology.

SMW page001... by neurotic-elf

Unfortunately, being sick for a week, being too exhausted because of the other cr*p I've already mentioned and an artist's block I've struggling with for the last couple of weeks, I haven't been able to finish them, as I was planning to and now I'll have to work twice as hard to make sure I have them ready on time. Anyway, I hope that everything will work out fine !!
:fingerscrossed:

That's about it for now,
take care and keep being creative !!

friends and foes...

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 18, 2011, 4:40 AM
backstabbed... by neurotic-elf

Sometimes you trust the wrong people.

Within a year I've lost three "friends".

I felt like SH*T.

But I just recently realised they obviously weren't worth it to begin with.

I feel better.

Sometimes people you barely even know treat you unexpectedly well.

So now it's time to focus on my work again and be ready to stand by the people who are always there for me too.
:aww:

In other news, The Crazy Greek Ladies [aka me and my friend gliovampire ] will be attending two comic conventions this spring.

ComicDom in April www.comicdom-con.gr/ where I might be at the fanzines floor / table [tbc]
and
The Bristol International Comic Expo again, where we'll actually have our own TABLE !!
We got  nr69 [no comments plz LOL!!] and we're super extra excited about this !!
:bounce:

So now I'm struggling to finish all of the mini comics I'd like to have for these conventions on time, so wish me luck !!
:work:

If everything goes well, I'll have a new DOUBLE comic of "100% Kiander & Ablyss", including the OOP "100%Mushy #0" and the new unpublished #1.
Both in full colour !!

Kiander and Ablyss comeback... by neurotic-elf

There will also be a second edition of the limited and sold out "Tw1sted Vision".
:w00t:
It won't be exactly the same as the first limited edition though, one story will change, two new stories will be added and one story will be out.
It'll also have a brand new cover, just you wait !! The few ones who bought the first edition will be able to get the second one in a lower price too.
;)

I'd like to thank the awesome authors, for their generosity, kindness and for entrusting me with their precious stories:

- my precious one K.A.
- Chris Lynch www.planetofthepenguins.com/
- Richard McAuliffe aka WelshBluemeanie
- Sissy Pantelis aka gliovampire
- Ian Struckhoff aka IanStruckhoff

:blowkiss:

I might also have two more self-published mini comics and prints, more info asap !!
;)

Last but definitely not least, almost a month ago I've submitted a short comic story to the Eagle Awards Initiative competition www.eaglesinitiative.com/, so please keep you fingers and toes crossed please !!
:fingerscrossed:

The story probably won't get a prize, but I'm already a WINNER, since due to this story I got the chance to work with another great artist, Lee Grice from the Small Press Big Mouth podcast and blog. Our first collaboration wasn't planned, but it's been an amazing experience and I'd definitely love working with him again in the future !!
If you're interested in more details about this short story, just check this SPBM blog entry smallpressbigmouth.blogspot.co… and then, go and check Lee and Stacey's podcasts, you won't be disappointed, I promise !!
:boogie:

I have much more news, but I'll spare you for the time being...

Innocent Soul

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 5, 2011, 3:49 AM
Hello and a happy new year !!

I truly hope that 2011 will be much better than 2010, even more creative and exciting for everyone.
:aww:

My year began with the launch of a comic project that has been in the works for quite some time now, also being my first webcomic ever and a collaboration with the really talented writer TravisLegge !!
I'm talking about Innocent Soul of course: innocentsoul.aegisstudios.com

you might have already seen the promo image of the first chapter of the story...

Innocent Soul promo.. by neurotic-elf

...but the first page was unleashed today: innocentsoul.aegisstudios.com/…
:excited:

If you're wondering about the story or the story behind the story, I'll do Travis do the talking:

"Welcome to INNOCENT SOUL a new supernatural thriller webcomic that asks "How far would YOU go to save your child?"
I began writing INNOCENT SOUL when I was sixteen years old, shortly after my eldest daughter was born. I was (and still am) a big fan of the DC VERTIGO comics of the time, particularly SWAMP THING, HELLBLAZER, PREACHER and SANDMAN. In many ways you will see the HEAVY influence of those books in the storytelling of INNOCENT SOUL, so if you like that sort of thing, stick around! If not, I recommend XKCD. Its intelligent, lighthearted, and rarely involves anyone going through (or to) Hell.

The art you are looking at was drawn by the beautiful, talented, gifted and skilled Valia Kapadai, my partner in this little dream-come-true. I've looked for fifteen years (and across an ocean) to find an artist who can convey what I need conveyed with this story. Val is the perfect lady for the job!

As I mentioned before, I began the first draft of INNOCENT SOUL right after my daughter's birth. It is, in every possible way, a love letter to her. I'm sorry it took so long to get it out, but on the bright side, now she's probably old enough to read it.

So, Amethyst, this is for you. Hopefully when the first arc of this comic draws to a close you will have a clearer idea of who your dad really is and how he truly feels about you.

I love you, kiddo.

Travis"

Me and Travis would really appreciated it if you'd check out this webcomic, and maybe even leave a comment, a suggestion or anything else.

We will be posting a new page every Wednesday, with the occasional extra content going up throughout the week, such as sketches, promos for our other projects or maybe just the occasional note from Travis or myself !! Please bookmark us and come back often !!

You can also follow me or Travis on Twitter as well, among the other [weird] tweets we'll definitely let you know about EVERY INNOCENT SOUL update !!

I have much more news, but I'll leave that for now.
